The Tigers have not announced the hiring as of Dec. 7, but Huff has reposted three Memphis athletics posts on X since Dec. 6 — including one from former Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan that welcomed him to the program.

Huff is leaving the Golden Eagles after one season. He was hired from Marshall after winning the 2024 Sun Belt Conference championship.

"Decisions like this are never simple, especially when they involve a place as special as Southern Miss," Huff said in the statement. "Coaching here has been one of the most meaningful opportunities of my career, and I am sincerely appreciative of the support and vision provided by Dr. (Joseph S.) Paul, Jeremy McClain and the entire administration. Their commitment to elevating Southern Miss athletics — continuing to invest, build and fight for sustained success — has this department on an undeniable upward trajectory.

"I also want to thank the fans and the broader Southern Miss family for their unwavering passion and support. The energy around this program, and the momentum being built every day, is real. Hattiesburg is a community unlike any other, and I'm grateful to have been a part of it. As I transition to my next opportunity, I carry with me tremendous respect for this university and deep gratitude for the experience we shared."

Southern Miss (7-5) was selected to the New Orleans Bowl and will play Western Kentucky (8-4) at the Caesars Superdome on Dec. 23 (4:30 p.m., ESPN).
