Learn more about how Fable's open world fantasy lets you meddle in the lives of over 1000 living NPCs with our brand new interview with Playground Games.
It's been 16 years since the launch of Fable 3 and six years since Xbox announced the big series revival led by longtime Forza Horizon studio Playground Games. Today, the devs finally lifted the veil on the fourth Fable game – officially just called Fable – and confirmed it will launch later this year. And yes, that launch will include PS5.
The original Fable trilogy launched across Xbox and Xbox 360 (with some PC ports thrown in), led by Peter Molyneux and Lionhead Studios. True to Molyneux's longtime reputation, the games were built on wild ambitions that they couldn't always measure up to – but they came close enough to deliver some of the most beloved RPG adventures of their era.

How Fable's open world fantasy lets you meddle in the lives of over 1000 living NPCs
While the new Fable is being led by an all-new team at an all-new studio, that ambition has stuck around. The game promises a population of 1,000 NPCs, each of which lives a simulated life with daily schedules and actions that play out based on their personalities and worldviews. Those worldviews also tie into a reputation that will see individuals judging you for your actions as a player – a more nuanced take on the black-and-white morality systems that governed RPGs of the era.
Perhaps most important of all: the distinctly British sense of humor seems to remain very much intact. We'll find out for sure how Playground's take on the beloved series coheres when it launches this fall.
There's another Xbox title for our list of upcoming PS5 games.
