Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar said President Donald Trump's rhetorical jabs against her contributed to the attack she faced this week during a town hall.

Speaking during a press conference in Minneapolis, Omar said that "facts have shown since I've gotten into elected office is that every time the president of the United States has chosen to use hateful rhetoric to talk about me and the community that I represent, my death threats skyrocket."

"I do believe that the facts of the situation are that I wouldn't be where I am at today, having to pay for security, having the government to think about providing me security, if Donald Trump wasn't in office," she added.

The attack in question took place on Tuesday, when a man sprayed her with an "unknown liquid" from a syringe. He can be seen rushing Omar as she called for the abolition of ICE and the impeachment of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. The man, Anthony Kazmierczak, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault.

Omar reacted in a social media post saying: "I'm ok. I'm a survivor so this small agitator isn't going to intimidate me from doing my work."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also slammed Trump after the attack, as well as Vice President JD Vance. "It is not a coincidence that after days of President Trump and VP Vance putting Rep. Omar in their crosshairs with slanderous public attacks, she gets assaulted at her town hall," the lawmaker said in a social media publication on Tuesday. "Thank God she is okay. If they want leaders to take down the temp, they need to look in the mirror," she added.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar throughout the years, most recently after claims of widespread fraud related to the Somali community in Minnesota, of which she is part.

"We've had people incarcerated for threatening to kill me. We have people that are being prosecuted right now for threatening to kill me and so it is something that does stay in the back of our minds," she said in December.
