If you’re looking to respec your character in No Rest For The Wicked, I’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that you can respec your stats if you’re unhappy with your build, and you can technically do so right after you reach the hub town Sacrament in the opening act of the game. The bad news is that you’ll have to work to unlock this feature, as it’s locked behind some fairly gnarly challenges. If you really, truly feel like your build is unsalvageable, you might be better off starting fresh with a whole new character.

That said, if you’re up to the task, below you’ll find all the steps you’ll need to add respeccing to your Realm in No Rest For The Wicked. Grab your mightiest weapon and brace yourself for combat.

With the recent update you can now play No Rest for the Wicked co-op, so here's what you need to do if you want to play with friends.

No Rest for the Wicked respec explained

While you can Respec eventually in NRFTW, it takes a little effort. There's a whole mission involved called Spoken and Unspoken that sees you unlocking the Crucible, a roguelike mode within the game. Here you'll eventually met a being called The Seneschal who can sell you the upgrade you need to Respec. You'll still need to find a specific statue at this point, and earn some specific currencies, so let's look at it all in more detail below.

Step 1: Unlock the Crucible.

After you reach Sacrament and wake up from a night in the Rookery Lodgings, the city will open up with stores and sidequests alike. Of all the options available, you’ll want to look for the sidequest called Spoken and Unspoken (location pictured above if you haven’t found it yet, otherwise check your Quests menu). After accepting this quest, follow the historian Elsa into the Cerim ruin, and make the blood offering to open a portal to the Crucible. While the blood offering looks painful, it fortunately doesn’t really drain your health.

If this is your first time here, the Crucible is essentially the roguelike mode of No Rest For The Wicked. While you will carry your current character into the dungeon with all your equipment intact, you’ll have to prevail against a series of randomized battle arenas while you purchase run-specific upgrades along the way. This area is scaled to your level, so unfortunately you won’t make this zone easier by gaining a dozen levels before heading in. As ironic as this may sound if you just want to respec, you’ll need a serviceable build with strong equipment to succeed.

Step 2: Reach floor 5 of the Crucible.

To reiterate, challenging the Crucible is no small feat. The enemies in here can overwhelm you if you aren’t careful, and most floors are absolutely swarmed with traps. And if those don’t get you, you might accidentally fling yourself to your death by accidentally dodge-rolling right over one of the many precariously placed ledges. However, if you can hold your own, a surprise awaits you on the fifth floor of the dungeon.

A giant worm-like being called The Seneschal will appear, and here you can purchase some significant, permanent upgrades. Of these, you’ll find an option called “Iron Corpus.” Iron Corpus is what you need to unlock respeccing. The catch is that it costs 20 Gloomseeds, which you likely won’t have the first time you reach this point. You can randomly earn Gloomseeds from defeated enemies in the Crucible, so just keep playing this mode until you have what you need. I was able to earn 20 Gloomseeds by the second time I made it to The Seneschal, but your mileage may vary.

Step 3: Return to the Cerim Crucible hub

Once you spend the 20 Gloomseeds needed to purchase the Iron Corpus upgrade, finish your Crucible run and return to the entrance portal. Look to the right of the portal, and you should see a statue with a blue light in front of it (pictured above). Examine this and you can finally respec your character.

Unfortunately, even with all the work it took you to get to this point, there’s still a catch: Respeccing costs Fallen Embers. One Fallen Ember will let you reallocate up to 10 skill points, so plan your respecs accordingly to get the most splendor for your ember.

Fallen Embers do fortunately drop from several sources. They can be found in chests, enemies can drop them, Crucible runs may award them, fishing can turn them up, and Grinnich will sell one to you in the Marketplace. However, these are still rare items as of writing, so only spend Fallen Embers on respeccing if you’re absolutely sure that’s what you want. You’ll need these forgotten flames to add enchantments to your gear, and only you can decide if it’s better to change your past decisions or bolster whatever you have in your present. Either way, at least now your respec station is here to stay.
