Star Wars have offered another window into The Mandalorian‘s universe ahead of its forthcoming feature film with a new short, Knot A Toy.

The two-minute short is a recreation of a scene in The Mandalorian in which Grogu explores the Razor Crest, the Mandalorian’s ship, but it’s been wholesomely recreated with the characters and the ship appearing as crochet toys.

During the clip, Grogu finds an object that he takes a shine to, only to be informed by pilot Din Djarin that it’s not a toy after all.

In a behind-the-scenes video shared to the official Star Wars YouTube account, Landis Fields revealed that the short used real crochet toys that were scanned with a 3D mesh built so they could be manipulated as required during the film. Fields and his team added details like the hairs of the thread on the toys for a more realistic “handmade feel”.

Knot A Toy arrives ahead of the forthcoming feature-length film The Mandalorian and Grogu. The big screen debut for the Disney+ title character will hit cinemas on May 22, 2026, with Pedro Pascal returning as the bounty hunter Din Djarin, aka The Mandalorian, alongside the animatronic Grogu, affectionately known as Baby Yoda.

Work had begun on the fourth season of the series but was interrupted by the Hollywood strikes in 2023. After a delay, Lucasfilm opted instead to prioritise a feature film in the Mandalorian franchise, and The Mandalorian And Grogu will now be the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker.

As shown in the trailer, Sigourney Weaver will join the cast, playing Ward, a colonel and leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers who had previously served with the Rebel Alliance. Jeremy Allen White also joins as Rotta the Hutt, son of Jabba.

Jon Favreau will direct the film, having also served as creator and showrunner of the Disney+ series, and he has written the new film alongside Dave Filoni, chief creative officer of Lucasfilm.

The Mandalorian And Grogu’s synopsis states: “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.”

The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the first of several new Star Wars film releases, with a new trilogy in the works from X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg.

In other Star Wars news, Lucasfilm’s outgoing boss Kathleen Kennedy has admitted that she somewhat regrets the studio making the Star Wars spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story.
