Less than a week after two local lawmakers in Sinaloa were shot by a group of armed civilians, Mexican authorities announced the arrest of one of the alleged perpetrators, who they say worked for Los Chapitos, the Sinaloa cartel faction led by the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

In a joint operation carried out by federal and state forces in Culiacán, Sinaloa, agents detained Jesús Emir Bazoco Peraza, also known as "Compa Güero" or "Radio 13," identified as an operator for Los Chapitos. As one of his aliases suggests, Bazoco Peraza was responsible for managing radio communications, installing surveillance cameras to monitor authorities' movements and acquiring drones for the cartel led by Iván Archivaldo Guzmán.

In a post on X, Mexico's Security Minister Omar García Harfuch confirmed the arrest and said authorities believe "Radio 13" participated in the Jan. 28 attack against lawmakers from the Movimiento Ciudadano party.

As reported by the Sinaloa-based outlet Los Noticieristas, Bazoco Peraza was employed by the Culiacán city government between 2018 and 2021, where he worked as an administrative assistant.

According to information obtained by the outlet, authorities were able to track down the suspect after locating a truck used by the attackers to flee following the shooting of Movimiento Ciudadano lawmakers Elizabeth Montoya and Sergio Torres, who were traveling in a vehicle accompanied by two bodyguards when they were attacked.

Last week, party national leader Jorge Álvarez Máynez said both officials were hospitalized in serious condition. He said Torres underwent successful surgery and remains in delicate condition, while Montoya lost an eye.

"She also has some brain injuries and is receiving treatment, but she requires extremely careful care," Máynez said, as reported by El País.

The shooting, along with a separate incident in which more than a dozen miners were kidnapped in the municipality of Concordia, prompted the federal government to deploy 1,600 soldiers to Sinaloa.

Following the recent wave of violence, compounded by the ongoing dispute between Los Chapitos and La Mayiza for control of Sinaloa and drug trafficking routes, authorities carried out additional arrests in the state as part of efforts to combat organized crime.

Harfuch also announced that six people were detained in the community of Navolato, while three others were arrested in Culiacán, where authorities seized high-powered weapons and tactical equipment. In total, Sinaloa's Public Security Secretariat and federal forces reported the arrest of 16 alleged members of organized crime linked to acts of violence in the state just on Feb. 2.
