Three Republicans in the House of Representatives defied President Donald Trump and joined Democrats in rejecting a procedural vote that would have prevented lawmakers from overturning his tariffs.

The lawmakers in question are Don Bacon, Thomas Massie and Kevin Kiley. The vote, which would have prevented members from bringing up resolutions to challenge Trump's tariffs through July 31, ended up failing 214-217, Axios noted.

"This isn't what rules are for," said Kiley. "The rule is to bring bills to the floor and set the parameters for debate. The purpose is not to sneak in unrelated language that expands the power of leadership at the expense of our members."

House Democrats, in turn, are reportedly ready to introduce a resolution challenging Trump's tariffs on Canada on Wednesday. "I think it's the job of Congress to take this vote and decide if tariffs are good, or if tariffs are bad," said Rep. Victoria Spartz.

CBS Noted that, however, an approval wouldn't have concrete effects. It would only be a rebuke of the tariffs, considering Trump can veto the decision. Both houses would need two-thirds of each chamber to overturn a presidential veto, figures unlikely to get.

A Supreme Court decision on the matter could take place before the summer. The outlet recalled that the high court appears skeptical of them.

House Speaker Mike Johnson reacted to the development, saying: "The rationale for this, for just extending this for a little bit longer to July, is to allow the Supreme Court to rule on this case that everybody's watching and waiting for. That process has been playing out. I think it's logical to allow that to continue."
