Dave Grohl has revealed that Foo Fighters finished work on their new studio album “the other day”.

Yesterday (January 24), the band played the opening date of the Australian leg of their ‘Take Cover’ tour at the UTAS Stadium in Launceston, Tasmania. During the encore, they played ‘Exhausted’ from the self-titled 1995 debut album, and as he introduced it, Grohl dropped the news.

“We’ll be back here sooner than you think,” he said to the Aussie crowd. “I know when we’re coming back! It is before my next birthday [January 14, 2027], just so you know.”

He continued: “And we might have a whole new record of fucking songs that we just finished the other day. I dunno!”

The band’s last studio album was ‘But Here We Are’ in 2023, their first since the passing of both drummer Taylor Hawkins and Grohl’s mother Virginia. NME gave the album the full five stars, writing: “‘But Here We Are’ is a beautiful, noisy celebration of brotherhood and a stark, painful exploration of loss. It is messy, gut-wrenching, ambitious and gorgeous, as the remaining members of Foo Fighters push themselves to their limits and beyond.”

Last year, they celebrated their 30th anniversary as a band with the single ‘Today’s Song’, and followed that up with another new track ‘Asking For A Friend’. In October, they also teased at a new era of music with a blistering teaser and the phrase, “about to take flight…”.

Foo Fighters also released a new live album capturing their recent run of intimate club shows. The six-track record, titled ‘Are Playing Where??? Vol. I’, arrived exclusively on Bandcamp in October.

The ‘Take Cover’ tour launched in Mexico earlier this month, although they did so without guitarist Pat Smear, who said he had to sit out some gigs having broken his foot in a “bizarre gardening accident”.

The band will make their return to the UK and Europe this summer as well, and the dates include two shows at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium on June 25 and 27. There are also festival slots at Mad Cool, Pinkpop and more lined-up.

Support across various dates will include Royel Otis, Inhaler, IDLES, Otoboke Beaver, Fat Dog and Die Spitz. Find the dates here and buy your tickets here. They have also announced a 2026 North American stadium tour.
