China's top general has been accused of leaking sensitive information to the United States and taking bribes for official acts, including promoting an officer to be defense minister, according to a new report.
Zhang Youxia was once considered Xi Jinping most trusted military ally, The Wall Street Journal noted. He stands accused of sending core technical data of the country's nuclear weapons to the United States.
He is also being investigated for seeking to build networks of influence to undermine the Communist Party's unity and abusing his authority.
Investigators are also examining his ties to Gu Jun, former general manager of China National Nuclear Corp., who is under investigation for related violations. Authorities said the Gu probe uncovered links to a security breach in China's nuclear sector, though details were not provided.
Zhang also stands accused of accepting large bribes in exchange for promotions, including helping elevate Li Shangfu to defense minister. Li was removed from office in 2023 and expelled from the Communist Party in 2024 for corruption.
The investigation marks a major escalation in Xi's yearslong campaign to remove corruption and disloyalty from the People's Liberation Army. Xi has also ordered a deep review of Zhang's earlier military command and expanded the probe to officers linked to him and to Gen. Liu Zhenli, another senior officer under investigation.
Since 2023, more than 50 senior officers and defense-industry executives have been removed or investigated. Analysts told the outlet that the sweeping purge could weaken the military's near-term readiness, even as it underscores Xi's consolidation of control over the armed forces.
