The reigning champions arrive full of confidence after dismantling Newcastle United 4–1 in their last outing, a result that has boosted hopes of building momentum at home. Liverpool have not managed successive league wins at Anfield since March, and they will be eager to change that trend while reinforcing their reputation for thriving on the big occasion in front of their own supporters.
Although Arne Slot's side have fallen out of contention for the domestic title, their ambitions remain very much alive. A place in next season's Champions League is firmly within reach, with the Reds currently sixth on 39 points, just two behind fourth-placed Manchester United. As the campaign moves into its decisive phase, every point has become crucial.
History offers Liverpool encouragement. Across all Premier League meetings between the two clubs, the Merseysiders have emerged victorious 21 times, compared to City's 12 wins, with 18 matches ending all square, statistics that underline Liverpool’s long-standing advantage in this fixture.
City, however, have their own targets in sight. Pep Guardiola's men are pushing for a seventh league title under the Spaniard and remain in pursuit of Arsenal at the summit, trailing the Gunners by six points. Victory on Merseyside would represent a major step in keeping that chase alive.
Anfield has proven an especially difficult venue for the Sky Blues. Their last league success there dates back to 2003, when Nicolas Anelka and Michael Tarnat struck in a memorable 2–1 win. Ending that two-decade wait will be firmly on City's agenda, as will completing a league double over Liverpool after already claiming victory in the reverse fixture.
Recent form suggests City are not without vulnerabilities. Last weekend's 2–2 draw against Tottenham saw Guardiola's side surrender a commanding 2–0 advantage, a lapse that raised concerns ahead of such a demanding test.
