Since its founding in 1966, skateboarding and footwear brand Vans has always been for those on the fringe. With origins in California’s surf culture, Vans found its first fan base in the Golden State’s skateboarding community, the ultimate subculture. Though you no longer have to be a skater to sport Vans, the brand has managed to maintain its rebellious ethos decades later. Most recently, its latest global campaign, “Off the Wall”, keeps the focus on individuality, serving as an ode to its roots.

Shot by Rosie Marks, the campaign stars Vans partners Hayley Williams, SZA, Franz Lyons, Travis Barker, Lizzie Armanto and T-Funk. True to its word, “Off The Wall” paints a picture of uninhibited self-expression, with each shot spotlighting the talent’s distinct style. There’s Travis Barker sporting a fur coat and posing ominously next to a husky, SZA staring at the camera hauntingly through a fish tank, and Hayley Williams, covered in hot pink lipstick and accompanied by mannequins. Each shot seems to send the message that there’s no one way to wear Vans, and no one way to show up as yourself, either.

The recent campaign also brings new versions of the Authentic, the brand’s first-ever shoe, which has remained one of its most well-loved styles. Born as a quiet, unassuming deck shoe, over the years, the Authentic has been claimed by skateboarders (some of the loudest kids on the block). To celebrate the six-decade milestone, the Off the Wall Authentic pack will drop on March 12, with additional colourways (and fun patterns) releasing on April 2.
