Subscribe to our newsletterAs someone borderline dependent on Animal Crossing for my nighttime wind down, there's no way I could turn my back on my island fam – my sweet Chester, my kibble-loving Nibbles. But I have to say, I haven't been this jealous of an adjacent cozy community in a minute, as Pokemon Pokopia players have been sharing some of the most wonderfully unhinged dialogue I've seen since the early '00s, back when the original Animal Crossing's villagers would send you letters with musings like, "I fear oblivion."
Anyway, back to Pokopia. Poking around on social media, it seems like Nintendo really let its Pokemon writers run wild in a way that's genuinely refreshing to see after years of milquetoast dialogue. Here's just a few of my favorites so far:

the way i instantly took a screenshot of the dialogue that post is referencing 😭😭😭 icon behavior from bulbasaur #pokopia

By comparison, as much as I treasure my precious Animal Crossing community, when you have more than 500 hours across six years of play time, it does start to get old hearing the same canned dialogue shared across multiple different villagers with the same personalities. Again, Chester, you're the best Animal Crossing villager ever, but if I have to hear about your dang bug friends one more time, I might have to see what Pokopia's all about.

Pokemon Pokopia review: "A brilliantly bizarre blend of Pokemon and Animal Crossing"
Legitimately, from these early impressions it seems like there's a lot more care that was put into making sure each individual Pokemon has its own unique personality, whereas Animal Crossing dialogue is largely pre-determined by personality type. Although, to be fair, Animal Crossing is six years old and came out during a different console generation. With New Horizons recently getting its huge 3.0 update, it's clear Nintendo isn't done with Animal Crossing, but it might have to channel its GameCube-era writing to compete with Pokopia.
Meanwhile: Pokopia players can't fathom just how big the Pokemon spin-off is so far: "More feature rich and wider in scope than Animal Crossing has ever been."
