Hideki Kamiya, legendary Capcom veteran with gems like Devil May Cry under his belt, has some thoughts to share on Resident Evil Requiem – a horror game that, uh, apparently has a tad too much horror in it.

Experiencing the recent game alongside fellow developers from his own studio, Clovers Inc., Kamiya reveals he's always wanted a less spooky mode in Resident Evil games – you know, the horror series he worked on himself, having literally directed Resident Evil 2. Amusingly, it's just too scary for him. "I've been saying for forever they should make a 'non-scary' mode," he admits in a clip of the devs playing Requiem together.

Someone chimes in, "That would completely defeat the concept of the game, though." That's not enough reason to deter Kamiya from believing in the aforementioned "non-scary" setting, however. "Look, I just want to enjoy the puzzles... the puzzles and the combat. I don't need the scary stuff." It's hilarious to hear from Kamiya – and, unsurprisingly, the comments don't disappoint. "Ironic that the man who made RE2 can't handle scary stuff," reads one.

"This is why I follow Kamiya," another replier jests, "he is just naturally funny." My favorite, though, says, "The man who directed the game that scared the crap outta me hates horror" – yep. Kamiya, a genre mastermind himself, isn't so keen on uber-scary experiences. I suppose it makes sense. Creating something is one thing, but actually having to get through it as a player is another. I myself wouldn't mind a less eerie mode, if I'm honest…

After all, the game at hand stands as one of the spookiest new games 2026 has had to offer so far. Our own Resident Evil Requiem review dubs it the "scariest game in the series yet" – so, maybe proceed with the lights on… or off, if you're brave.
